Introduction

Government Degree College, R.S. Pura affiliated to University of Jammu was established in the year 2005 by the Govt. of Jammu and Kashmir. R.S. Purais named after the great Dogra Ruler MaharajaRanbir Singh, successor of Maharaja GulabSingh, the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir State. R.S. Pura is located near the Indo-Pak International Border Suchetgarh which is nearly 35 km from Jammu City and only 10.3m from R.S Pura. The post of Suchetgarh was set up after first war over Kashmir in 1947-48 Prior to Independence there used to be Octroi post for collection of taxes at Suchetgarh. Now it is used as a Border Security Post which is a tourist attraction and an alternative for Wagah Border attracting many tourists nowadays. Near the vicinity of this post there lie a Prehistoric Raghunath Temple which was established in the year 1837 by Maharaja Gulab Singh who was the first king of Jammu and Kashmir R.S. Purais not only historically important but this is also a land of warriors and heroes theQaid-e-Azam post from Pakistan intruders and is now named as Bana Post. Stadium adjacent to college is also named as Bana Singh Stadium. Many sonsof this soil exhibited their bravery as soldiers in the Kargil War in 1999 such as Lance NaikDevinder Singh andSepoyJanvir Singh. R.S Pura is called the rice bowl of J&K as this place is bestowed with a high fertile soil. Fame of Ranbir Singh R.S. Pura is connected with its Basmati Rice known for its quality and unique aroma. It is believed that this unique aroma is due to the water of Chenab which is used to irrigate the agricultural lands in every part of R.S Pura through Ranbir Canal system. It is also well known for Gharana Wetland which is home to more than 170 species of birds and where migratory birds from temperate zones of Asia come to enjoy the landscape. In educational field R.S. Pura has its own bench mark – a Degree College – a long cherished dream of tis inhabitants which materialized in the year 2005. It is established in the first phase of the state educational policy to open College at Tehsil and Sub-District level. This step of Govt. has facilitated the quality education at the doorstep of the people residing in the peripheries of district headquarters. In 2005 only 35 students were enrolled for the session 2005-2006 and the college started with only four subjects in Arts stream- English, Applied Mathematics, Computer Application and Education and in 2010 Science stream was also added on the demand of the local public and the students. In 2014 Geography subject was sanctioned and then added to the already existing combinations for the session commencing from July, 2014. Recently in the year 2020 college has been accorded sanction for introducing Music subject. This is only institution of Higher Education in the Tehsil enrolling more than 1551 students annually and teaching 31 programmes of 22 subjects in two streams viz. Arts, Science and B.A Hindi Honours. The college was recognized by UGC under section 2 (f) and 12 (b) in 2010. The enrollment of the students in this college is increasing regularly. At present number of students enrolled in to streams are 1551. The college lays emphasis on quality education increase of increasing in the enrollment of the students as the college believes in a value driven organizational culture that motivates students, staff and faculty members to think of education as something that helps to unfold and express oneself to be performer and achievers through learning and self-realization. The institute induces self-discipline rather than supervision.
